"Pearl" arises from the constant literary association of teeth and pearls, pearly white teeth. The replacement of a tooth with river pearl operates as a collapse of the allegorical. A goat's jaw hangs from the hall at human height, and the deformity of the Baroque pearl resonates as a chewing gum in a strange mix of dentistry and jewellery.
