Rubén Grilo (Lugo, 1981) uses his work as a tool to explore the mechanics of subjectivity: how it is constituted, where its limits lie and what is its potentiality. His work often makes reference to the thresholds of perception, to the scale of the human body, to the mechanics of affect and to narratives that culturally reinforce the myth of the subject, such as creativity, personality or style. Although many of these elements appear on a recurring basis and some of his pieces are formulated with strong internal logic, Grilo deliberately avoids interpretation. On the contrary, his work can be understood as a changing and autonomous system in tension with the environment, time and space in which it is exhibited. His installations invite us to review the artificial separation between text and context, between interior and exterior, between experience and knowledge, between information and noise.

“The press is a watchdog. Not a lapdog. A watchdog. Now, a watchdog can’t be right all the time. He doesn’t bark only when he sees or smells something that’s dangerous. A good watchdog barks at things that are suspicious.” -Dan Rather (American journalist and a former anchor for CBS Evening News)
